Contributions, Charges and Payments

At Kent Street Senior High School, we enrich the educational experience with funds collected through the Voluntary Contributions and Charges. Funds collected from families are spent on a range of resources including more specialised resources and consumables aimed at providing educational experiences that prepare students for the world beyond school.

Compulsory Charges and Voluntary Contributions

As part of the school budgeting process, schools can request a $235 Voluntary Contribution per student, part of which is allocated to each Learning Area, to ensure that we can provide the best possible educational programs.
Some subjects involve extra costs in addition to the Voluntary Contribution – these are compulsory charges. These charges cover items students use that are not provided by the Department of Education.
- In Years 7 and 8, these apply only to specialist programs such as Aviation, Cricket, Fashion & Design and Katalyst (Science).
- In Years 9 and 10, students choose elective subjects that may include compulsory charges. For example, subjects like Metalwork, Woodwork, and Food require materials, equipment, or venue hire.
- In Years 11 and 12 all subjects have a compulsory cost dependant on specialist materials, excursions, certificates, or work placement requirements.

Secondary Assistance Scheme

Education Program Allowance and Clothing Allowance The Secondary Assistance Scheme (SAS) is available to secondary students whose parent/guardian holds a Services Australia (Centrelink) Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card or Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner (Blue) Concession Card. The scheme is available to students up to and including the year in which they turn 18.

Applications are made by the parent or guardian for students enrolled in Years 7 – 12. Application forms are to be completed and returned to the school as early as possible in Term 1.
The Secondary Assistance Scheme is comprised of:

$235 Education Program Allowance paid directly to the school.
$115 Clothing Allowance paid directly to the parent / guardian or the school.

The Education Program Allowance will be paid directly to the school and will be applied to compulsory Charges first, followed by Voluntary Contributions. Parents and guardians can choose to either have the Clothing Allowance paid to them or directly to the school. If paid to the school, the funds will be allocated to compulsory Charges first, followed by Voluntary Contributions and Voluntary Approved Requests.
