Health & Physical Education

Courses in Health and Physical Education focus on the physical, mental, emotional, and social dimensions of the health of the individual. Students develop the knowledge and skills which promote healthy practices, encourage participation in regular physical activity and support the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.

Health & Physical Education Learning Outcomes

    Students know and understand health physical activity concepts that enable informed decisions for a healthy, active lifestyle.

    Students exhibit attitudes and values that promote personal, family and community health and participation in physical activity.

    Students demonstrate movement skills and strategies for confident participation in physical activity.
  4. Self Management Skills
    Students demonstrate self management skills that enable them to make informed decisions for healthy, active lifestyles.
  5. Interpersonal Skills
    Students demonstrate the interpersonal skills necessary for effective relationships and healthy, active lifestyles.

The Health Education course is compulsory and aims to develop the student’s knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to make informed decisions and become responsible for their own health now and in the future.

Senior School Health and Physical Education Courses

ATAR - Health Studies

In this ATAR course students explore health as a dynamic quality of life. They examine the impact of social, environmental, economic and biomedical determinants on health and their collective contribution to health disparities, as well as exploring approaches to address barriers which prevent groups from experiencing better health. Students apply inquiry skills to examine and analyse health issues, develop arguments and draw evidence-based conclusions. The course also provides students with opportunities to develop skills that will enable them to pursue careers in health promotion, research or community health care.

General - Health Studies

In this General course students explore health as a dynamic quality of life. They will consider the way in which beliefs and attitudes influence health decisions and learn how to plan and take action that will promote their own and the health of others. They examine the impact of social and environmental factors on health and use inquiry skills to investigate and respond to relevant issues. The course also provides students with opportunities  to  develop  skills  that  will  enable them to pursue careers in health promotion, research or community health care.

ATAR - Physical Education Studies

Physical Educatio n Studi es co ntributes to the development of students ’ physical , so cial  and emotional growth. In the Physical Education Studies ATAR course students learn about physiological, psychological and biomechanical principles, and apply these to analyse and improve personal and group performances in physical activities. Throughout the course, students learn through integrated written, oral and active learning experiences. The course also provides students with opportunities to develop skills that will enable them to pursue personal interests and potential in physical activity as athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and/or volunteers.

General - Physical Education Studies

Physical Educatio n Studi es co ntributes to the development of students ’ physical , so cial  and emotional growth. The Physical Education Studies General course provides students with opportunities to understand and improve performance  through  the   integration  of  theoretical  concepts  and  practical  activities.  Through  engagement as performers, leaders, coaches, analysts and planners of physical activity, students may develop skills that can be utilised in leisure, recreation, education, sport development, youth work, health and medical fields.
